To carry water away from the roof of a building, elongated fantastical animals known as gargoyles were used. Usually made of stone, the length of the gargoyle determines how far water is directed from the wall thereby helping to prevent water from causing damage to masonry and mortar. Many medieval cathedrals included gargoyles and grotesques. They are attributed with the power to ward off evil spirits, guarding the buildings they occupy and protecting those inside.
